SkinPen Microneedling Treatment - Skinology Medical Aesthetics Clinic - London UK - 3

SkinPen® Microneedling

Microneedling is beneficial in reducing and smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles, reducing the appearance of large pores and scars (including acne scarring), helping hyperpigmentation, improving the texture of ageing, ‘saggy’ and sun-damaged skin, reducing the appearance of stretch marks and treating hair loss. In addition, when used with an active skincare regimen, microneedling can help products to penetrate more deeply into the skin, making them more effective.

About SkinPen® Microneedling

As we age, collagen production declines rapidly, particularly after the age of 30. Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive and non-surgical procedure for skin rejuvenation.
Microneedling involves using a device with multiple fine, minuscule, sterile needles to puncture the skin which activates a natural healing process. This controlled, intentional injury to the epidermis results in increased production of growth factors, which in turn stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. As more collagen and elastin are produced, the skin looks visibly smoother, firmer, plumper and radiant.
You can buy manual dermarollers to use at home but there is an increased risk of infection from poor sterilisation and ‘track marks’ to the treated area.
At Skinology Medical Aesthetics, we use SkinPen® Precision, an award-winning microneedling device recognised for its supreme efficacy, safety and patient satisfaction. SkinPen® Precision is also the first FDA approved device in the world.
Microneedling is generally suitable for all adults and can be carried out anywhere on the body. You can expect to see some benefit within a couple of weeks. You will see the most skin rejuvenation at 6 months. Results are long-lasting and often continue for up to a year. Best results are achieved with a course of 3-4 treatments followed by maintenance treatments usually once every 3-6 months.
The treatment involves 3 steps. Your practitioner will support and guide you every step of the way.

Step 1: Consultation and Consent

A comprehensive consultation is always undertaken to assess your suitability for treatment, understand expectations and to help formulate a customised and safe plan should you decide to go ahead with treatment.

During the consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss any specific skin concerns you may have. The practitioner will undertake a medical history and skin assessment and ask details about your current skincare routine. Based on the assessment, the practitioner will discuss whether you are suitable for microneedling treatment. If so, they will advise on a treatment plan and provide their expert opinion about realistic and expected outcomes. They will also discuss the possible side effects, any risks and the procedure in detail to allow you to make an informed choice about whether you wish to have the treatment.

You are strongly encouraged to consider all the benefits and risks explained to you as part of the consultation and clarify anything you are unsure about. It is important not to rush into any decisions. Treatment will only go ahead if both you and the practitioner agree and are happy to proceed, and after you have provided written consent to treatment.

You may be asked to adopt a particular skincare regimen ahead of your treatment to optimise the results. Your practitioner will explain this during your consultation. One week before your appointment, you should avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, St John’s Wort and fish oil supplements as these can increase your risk of bleeding. You can however take paracetamol should you require pain relief. If you are taking prescribed medication, including aspirin, do not stop taking this without consulting with the practitioner or your GP beforehand.

You should avoid drinking any alcohol 24 hours before any microneedling sessions as this can also increase the risk of bleeding.

Step 2: Microneedling Treatment

The procedure will involve first prepping the skin by removing any make-up/skin care products from the treatment area. Thereafter, a topical anaesthetic cream will be applied and left on the skin for around 30 minutes to numb the skin and ease comfort. Once the skin is sufficiently numb, the anaesthetic cream will be gently wiped off and the skin will be thoroughly cleansed with an antiseptic. The practitioner will then use SkinPen® Precision to make small pinpricks to the skin by passing the device over the treatment area gently and methodically to promote skin rejuvenation. Depending on the skin concern and area being treated, the treatment can take from 30-60 minutes.

Pre- and post-treatment photos will be taken and held by the clinic for medical documentation purposes.

Aftercare is an extremely important part of the treatment to minimise risk and ensure good results are achieved. After treatment, your skin is likely to look red and feel more sensitive, but this will resolve in the next 24 hours. Detailed aftercare advice will be provided at your consultation but will include lots of hydration, and using fresh towels and pillowcases. Not touching or rubbing the skin; keeping the area clean and make-up free; and avoiding alcohol, strenuous exercise/gym, saunas and steam rooms for 24-48 hours. No prescription skin actives such as benzoyl peroxide/retinoids, fake tans or botulinum toxin treatments for 14 days; and no dermal fillers, laser treatments, waxing/threading or extreme sun exposure for 28 days.

LEADERSHIP TO EXCELLENCE

Founder & Clinical Director

Yogita Dawda

As the Founder and Clinical Director of Skinology Medical Aesthetics, my passion for dermatology started during university as an undergraduate and stemmed from my personal struggle with acne throughout my teens and early adulthood. I recall vividly the effect of having bad skin on my confidence but with the right support, I was able to love my skin and myself again.

After graduating in 1999, I started working in a large NHS teaching hospital where I was fortunate to gain experience in a wide range of clinical areas. In 2002, I chose to specialise in mental health where I practised as an independent prescribing pharmacist. In 2022, I became one of the first credentialed Consultant Pharmacists by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS), awarded to individuals who have demonstrated delivery of expert level clinical care and influenced positive change across the healthcare.

FAQs

A Medical Aesthetics Clinic is run or led by medical professionals who use their medical expertise to provide non-surgical cosmetic treatments to enhance or maintain one’s natural beauty and help address specific concerns such as wrinkles, pigmentation, acne, scars and ageing. All procedures are performed by qualified medical professionals.

Absolutely. At Skinology Medical Aesthetics, before any treatment is provided, a face to face consultation with a medical practitioner is essential to help us understand your concerns, undertake a thorough assessment and recommend the most suitable treatment plan tailored to your needs and budget.
